This Month’s News for:    October                                October is Anti-bullying Month! What can you do to prevent bullying? ·        5th Grade is continuing to study Native American Tribes, and will be moving onto studying explorers this month. ·        6th Grade will be studying Greece ·        5th and 6th Grade will continue to study ecosystems and how they are affected by human impact ·        Homework is sent out daily. Make sure to sign Reading Logs daily! ·        Costume Parade will be at 12:40 on Tuesday, October 31st. Students will be dismissed at 1:34. ·        Our first Wacky Wednesday is on October 18th! Students wear Fall, or Halloween attire, but are not allowed to wear costumes ·        Picture Day is Tuesday, October 17th ·        October Birthdays- Happy Birthday Lyric (10/4), Ocean (10/10), Payton (10/16), and Ms. Krumal (10/8).

This Month’s News of:    September 5th Grade is studying Native American tribes and have been assigned individual states to research and present. 6th Grade is studying hominids and the culture of early man 5th and 6th Grade will be discussing Ecosystems and working on a Design Based Learning Project for Science. They will be working in collaborative groups to build a “Never Before Seen” ecosystem with all the components necessary to survive. They may be asking you for materials around the house to contribute to this project. They will need to bring in their materials for their group by Thursday, September 14th   Thank you so much to everyone who has donated supplies to our classroom. They are much appreciated! Homework is sent out daily. Weekly Spelling assessments start this week! Look out for spelling homework! September Birthdays- Happy Birthday Pirate (9/11)!

Dear Families of Room 17,

Thank you soooooo much for making Teacher Appreciation Week so special! From the bottom of my heart, I am truly grateful to have such an awesome group of students and families to work closely with this year. You have made my job as an educator something to look forward to everyday.

• SBAC TESTING STARTS THIS WEEK! Testing will begin on Thursday, May 18 and will end Wednesday May 24th. Please make sure students are here promptly each day. 

• Volunteer Tea : Tuesday at 2:45pm in the MPR

• From this week forward, the only homework assigned will be that of practicing for our Culmination performance. We will be practicing songs, getting costumes and props. COSTUMES SHOULD BE BROUGHT TO CLASS BY MONDAY MAY 22. 

• The Culmination Ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, June 8 at 8:30am , followed by the Culmination reception, both in the MPR. 

• HISTORY PROJECTS are due this Friday May 19. This is an in-class assignment, and students should work on at home if necessary to meet due date. 

• 6th Grade Week is coming! The week after testing, (May 30th -June 6) will be a memorable week with nothing but fun! Celebratory activities for their final year here at MWES. We need drivers and chaperones for Wednesday May 31, our Picnic in the Park day!

• Thursday May 25 is Open House! This will be our last fundraising opportunity for our culmination after party! Thank you to all the volunteers who helped with the Spaghetti Dinner-The students raised $370!! We have approximately $1200 toward our $1900 goal. Please reply to Susanne and Franki if you are able to help with our last fundraiser. 

• May 29-Memorial Day-School will not be in session-enjoy! 

• May 30-June 2 : 6th Grade Week- see previous blog post and check back packs for handout of details.

Attention 6th Grade Parents and Students of Room 17

6th Grade Week is coming and we need your help!

For the week of 5/30-6/2, Sixth grade will be celebrating their special last year here at Mt. Washington. The following is a description of the dates and activities involved:

Tuesday May 30: T-shirt making
Making 6th Grade shirts with puff paint for their game against each other-TEAM "A" vs, TEAM "B"

We need puff paints and shirts-let us know if you can help us get these! 

Wednesday May 31: 6th grade Picnic at the Park ! 
Please join us at Debs Park for a day filled with water balloons, ball sports, and potluck picnic fun. A signup genius will go out for Blankets, meal contributions, and game supplies. We also need chaperones and drivers to get the students to and from school and the park. Please contact Ms. Krumal if you are able to help transport students and/or chaperone this field trip.

Thursday June 1: Game Day! 
Students can bring games from home to play and share in the classroom. Today the students will also play their special Team "A" vs. Team "B" softball game, a warm-up for the big game against the teachers after culmination.  This game is scheduled for 8:20a-9:40a and parents are welcome to attend and cheer! Game On!

Friday June 2: Dance Party! 
Dance Party/Potluck in the MPR. This will be a potluck, and we are asking everyone to sign-up for a dish. We will also need chaperones in the MPR. Please email Ms. Krumal if you are able to chaperone the dance party.

This will be an awesome week for our students! Let's work together and make it memorable!

Room 17's 6th Grade News

Week of 2/27-3/3/17

This week is Read Across America! Every day students can show spirit in different ways to honor the great author Dr. Seuss' birthday, and of course by reading! 

Monday: CAT IN THE HAT day-wear crazy hats! 
Tuesday: FOX IN SOCKS day-wear crazy socks/shoes! 
Wednesday: WACKY WEDNESDAY-wear wacky clothing (backwards, unmatched, etc.)
Thursday: OH THE PLACES YOU WILL GO-wear college apparel
Friday: ONE FISH TWO FISH RED FISH BLUE FISH- wear red and/or blue

Report cards for the second reporting period will be sent out on Friday. If you have questions, comments or would like to schedule a teacher conference, please email Ms. Krumal at jek7653@lausd.net or call 323-225-8320. 

Students are working on their fictional civilization book assignment in class and are encouraged to work at home as well. Please remind your child to use a pen drive to save work for transport from home to school.

Room 17's 6th Grade News 2/06/10-2/10/17

This Week's News:

• February is Black History Month. On Monday, the students were given the name of a famous black historian on whom they will be doing research and writing about. They will also be presenting this report in class-more details to come. Please allow time for your child to conduct research and print out a portrait of their assigned personality. 

• Wednesday, 2/8 is Wacky Wednesday. Wear Valentine Attire! 

• ELA Interim Assessment this Thursday 2/9. Please support your child in being on time, well rested with a healthy breakfast. 

• Wednesday 2/22: Field Trip to the Science Center. Please send $5 for IMAX movie to school with your child attn: Ms. Krumal. 

• Ancient Civilization Reports were a success! Thank you for all your support! 

• Spelling and Vocabulary words are the same from last week. 

We had a group discussion in class on the significance of empathy and the power of words. We discussed instances of discrimination and how feelings and lives have been affected by it throughout history. We also discussed how there have been several historical events that have led up to the civilization we have become today. It is vital we learn from history and try to be better human beings in the process. It is our responsibility to teach our children values and empathy and it is my pleasure to play a role in such lessons. In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., "In the end we will not remember the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends." Empathy is a character trait that is developed naturally, but also taught and practiced. Thank you for your support in talking with you child about this valuable trait.
